About Scouts
The forth section in the Scouting family is Scouts. These are boys and girls aged 10½ to 14 and have often moved up from Cubs. Scouts are found all over the world and we have a fair few in Wigan especially in the Winstanley area! As well as adventure, our Scouts learn leadership skills, teamwork, to try new things and build on their existing skills.
Scouts was started in 1907 by Robert Baden-Powell on Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour and the movement has grown to world wide proportions.
Adventure
Scouts at 16th Wigan enjoy many adventurous activities including hikes, camping, water sports, high ropes and more traditional scouting skills such as fire lighting and pioneering.
Our Scouts work towards over 70 different badges covering nearly every hobby; from painting, circus skills, DIY, martial arts, to photography. Scouts also have a series of challenge badges and if they complete these they are awarded the Chief Scout’s Gold award, the highest award they can achieve in the Scout section.
Team Work
Our scouts have opportunities to work together to further their teamwork skills. We often take part in many competitions such as swimming, camping, football, hiking or shooting where scouts develop their teamwork skills.
Nights Away
Our Scouts enjoy many residential experiences, whether its staying in purpose built bunkhouses, on local Scout Campsites, at Scout Activity Centres or further afield. Wherever they end up its always fun! Scouts can experiance an independant adventure under the guidance of their experienced leaders.
